3 Orioles win Gold Gloves; 9 1st-timers, not Trout

J.J. Hardy thought he'd hit a home run, only to be robbed when Mike Trout made one of the most sensational grabs of the season.

On Tuesday night, Hardy caught a break.

The Baltimore shortstop won a Gold Glove, putting him among a group of nine players honored for the first time for their fielding excellence.

"It means a lot to me," said Hardy, in his eighth big league season. "It's definitely an award I always hoped to get and never really expected to get. I'm surprised and honored at the same time."

Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen, San Diego third baseman Chase Headley and Oakland right fielder Josh Reddick also were first-time selections.

"I'm just happy I can pull it out for them and get the A's name even more out there," Reddick said. "It's a huge honor, I'm always taking pride in both sides of my game and trying to be a complete player. You never know what one play, whether the first or the ninth inning, is going to win a ballgame. That's what my mother and father taught me."

Headley, who had a breakout year with the bat, said he and Padres coach Glenn Hoffman, a former major league shortstop, talked during spring training about improving his defense.

"The foundation was laid there," Headley said. "Obviously it's nice when you get the results when you focus on something. ... Your pitcher counts on you to make routine plays each and every time. I was able to do a better job this year."

The Orioles were the only team with three winners. Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones and catcher Matt Wieters were second-time choices, joining Hardy for the awards chosen by major league managers and coaches and presented by Rawlings.

Trout, the Angels rookie center fielder who spent the year climbing walls to take away potential homers, was not picked. Among his best catches came against Hardy at Camden Yards in June.

The San Francisco Giants, fresh off winning a World Series in which they excelled with their gloves, did not have a Gold Glover.

These were the first major awards presented during the offseason, and the MVPs, Cy Youngs and others will come in mid-November. Gold Gloves always seem to raise a ruckus, with many claiming the prizes ? actual gloves colored gold ? don't define the most deserving fielders.

Hardy led the AL in fielding percentage, making only six errors in 158 games. Others relying on more advanced metrics and insist Seattle's Brendan Ryan was the best shortstop ? then again, even though awards are strictly for fielding, players who don't produce at the plate often get bypassed, and Ryan hit a weak .194. Hardy hit 22 home runs.

"I've always hoped but I never expected it," Hardy said. "It's definitely an award I've seen a lot of shortstops get that are really flashy and kind of catch the eye of a lot of people. I don't look at myself that way. I kind of look at myself as just trying to be consistent and steady. I never felt like people noticed."

Wieters, meanwhile, was chosen despite leading AL catchers with 10 errors. He was recognized for the many things he does well ? he threw out 39 percent of would-be basestealers and rarely let pitches get past him.

Strong-armed St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina won for the fifth straight year and Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira added his fifth award. Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre, Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins and Miami pitcher Mark Buehrle became four-time winners.

"I think I'm just regular, above average, just like the other guys. I just love playing the position every night," Beltre said. "I take my position as a challenge and want to make every play I can. I don't see myself as that good."

Buehrle won three times with the Chicago White Sox before joining the Marlins last winter.

"With a whole new group of managers voting for you, it wasn't like it was handed to you," Buehrle said. "The Gold Glove gets to be, 'He won it last year, give it to him again.' This one means a lot, because switching leagues, it was different managers voting on it. I had to do my job to earn it."

The other first-time winners in the National League were Washington first baseman Adam LaRoche, Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney and Atlanta right fielder Jason Heyward.

"I'm extremely thrilled," Barney said. "It's something you came into the season working toward, but it's not something that I thought the results would be there as quickly as they were. I'm extremely happy about it. There's a lot of good competition out there, obviously, and I'm really surprised that ended up happening for me. So it's an exciting night for me."

In the AL, pitchers Jake Peavy of the White Sox and Jeremy Hellickson shared the honor as first-time winners. This was only the third time since the Gold Gloves were first presented in 1957 that there was a tie ? there were four NL outfielders in 2007 and four AL outfielders in 1985.

Also winning this year: Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon and Colorado left fielder Carlos Gonzalez.

Several players were rewarded for their wins.

Beltre received a $100,000 bonus and Hardy got $75,000, Gordon, LaRoche, Molina, Peavy and Rollins each added $50,000; Gonzalez, Jones and McCutchen $25,000 apiece.

In addition, Gordon's salaries for 2014 and 2015 increase by $250,000 a year to $10.25 million and $12.75 million. His 2016 player option also rises by $250,000 to $12.75 million.

Spooky Science: Make a Ghostly Illusion

Bring Science Home

A visual Halloween trick from Scientific American

SEEING THINGS: You won't believe your eyes in this spooktacular illusion. Image: George Retseck

Key Concepts
Neuroscience
Photoreceptor
Afterimage
Optical illusion

Introduction
Halloween is a time for sharing ghost stories and watching spooky movies. But have you ever thought about the science behind some of these uncanny experiences? Haunted houses, for example, take advantage of the way your brain uses sensory information. Often they include dim lighting and confusing sound effects to keep you disoriented and jittery, primed for fright. In this activity, you'll create an optical illusion and learn that your eyes can play some eerie tricks on you?even in broad daylight. You'll also discover this peculiar apparition has a simple scientific explanation.

Background
Your eye has many different parts, including a light-sensitive retina at the back of the eyeball. The retina collects light signals via special cells called photoreceptors (photo comes from the Greek word for light). Your retina's photoreceptors fall into two groups: rods and cones. Rods perceive changes from light to dark and cones receive color signals. Much like the receptors in your skin, taste buds in your mouth or hair cells in your ear, your eyes' receptors collect visual information about the outside world and send it to the brain to be decoded and interpreted.

Materials
???? Several sheets of white paper
???? Brightly colored markers

Procedure
???? Draw a ghost (or other shape of your choice) on one of the blank sheets of paper on the center of the page using a colored marker. Make sure your outline is bold or fill the image in with color.
???? When your drawing is finished put your picture side by side with a blank sheet.
???? Stare at the center of your drawing for 20 seconds without blinking?it's okay to count aloud to 20 or ask a friend to time you.
???? After 20 seconds immediately look at the blank sheet of paper. What do you see?
???? Take another sheet and draw another shape, this time using a few different colored markers.
???? Again, set your drawing beside a blank sheet of paper, stare at the image for 20 seconds then look at the blank sheet. Now what do you see? Do you notice any unusual colors?
???? Return to your first ghost drawing. Set it beside a blank sheet and this time stare at the center of the image with just your right eye for 20 seconds.
???? Keeping your left eye closed, use your right eye look at the blank sheet. What do you see? Now quickly close it and open your left eye to look at the sheet. What do you see this time?
???? Switch back and forth between eyes. Do both eyes see the same image? Then repeat the previous step, this time starting with your left eye.
???? Extra: Repeat this experiment using both eyes and time how long it takes for the ghostly image to fade away. Try it again, but stare for more or less time. What do you notice about the image if you stare for more time? What happens if you stare for less time?

Apple 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro hands-on!

Apple 13inch Retina MacBook Pro handson!

Apple just introduced its second Retina display MacBook: the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which starts at $1,699 and is shipping today. Just months after the 15-incher was gifted with a display that packs more pixels than your existing HDTV, the 13-inch sibling is receiving similar treatment. Unveiled today in San Jose alongside the iPad mini, the intensely dense 13-inch MBP is true to the rumors -- there's a 2,560 x 1,600 panel, a pair of Thunderbolt ports, a full-size HDMI socket and a MagSafe 2 power connector. Unfortunately, those yearning for a Retina-equipped MacBook Air won't find their dreams fulfilled just yet, but you can bet that holdouts will most certainly give this guy a look.

For starters, it's wildly thin. No, not manilla envelope thin, but thin enough to slip into most briefcases and backpacks without the consumer even noticing. Outside of that, it's mostly a shrunken version of the 15-incher let loose over the summer. The unibody design is as tight as ever, with the fit and finish continuing to impress. In my estimation, this is Apple's most deliberate move yet to differentiate the 13-inch MacBook Pro from the 13-inch MacBook Air. On one hand, power users longing for a highly portable laptop can rejoice; on the other, this could be seen as reason for Apple to restrict the use of Retina displays to its Pro range for the foreseeable future.

Compared to the 1,280 x 800 resolution of the non-Retina 13-inch MBP, the new display is particularly stunning. Text has never looked more crisp, and colors are stupendously vibrant. Of course, apps, websites and graphics that haven't been optimized for Retina still look like utter rubbish, and as more Apple machines transition to these panels, the outcry is going to get even louder. But, hopefully, it'll light a fire under developers to get with the program.

Space shuttle Endeavour's L.A. journey subject of beautiful time-lapse video

Space shuttle Endeavour, you're a star. A captivating new time-lapse movie has condensed Endeavour's recent three-day road trip to a Los Angeles museum into mere minutes, offering a spectacular tribute to the spaceship and the City of Angels.

The amazing time-lapse view of?Endeavour's L.A. street journey, which ran from Friday to late Sunday (Oct. 12 to 14), was created by a team of photographers organized by Matthew Givot. The photographers spent four days following Endeavour's parade through Los Angeles as the shuttle made its way from Los Angeles International Airport to its final home, the California Science Center, to be placed on public display.

"The only thing that kept us going was pure love the art and adrenaline," Givot wrote in a?video description on Vimeo, where he posted the time-lapse movie "Mission 26: The Big Endeavour." The title is a nod to Endeavour's final trip after 25 space missions during its career.

Endeavour made the 12-mile (19 kilometers) trip from the airport to the museum at a slow, careful pace, with work crews taking care to avoid snaring the shuttle on power lines or scraping its wings on trees or other obstacles. [Photos: Shuttle Endeavour Arrives at L.A. Museum Home]

Huge crowds turned out to see the space shuttle drive along the streets of Los Angeles. While a NASA transporter vehicle hauled the shuttle much of the way, a Toyota Tundra pickup truck towed Endeavour across a 405 Freeway overpass during the trip.

"The biggest thing for me, it was the people," Givot told SPACE.com. "It was just seeing the joy and excitement, and their pride of living in L.A. That was the best part of the whole thing."

It was clear to those watching Endeavour that the event was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, he added.

Givot was joined in the time-lapse project by photographers Joe Capra, Chris Pritchard, Brian Hawkins, Andrew Walker and Ryan Killackey. They worked closely with the Inglewood Police Department to prepare their jaw-dropping shots.

NASA retired Endeavour along with the rest of its?space shuttle?fleet in 2011 after 30 years of spaceflight. The agency plans to use new private?spacecraft to carry astronauts and cargo into orbit, and is developing a new rocket and space capsule for deep space missions.

Meanwhile, Endeavour and its sister ships Discovery and Atlantis, as well as the test orbiter Enterprise, are all being placed on public display, though Endeavour is the only one on the West Coast. ?Endeavour was delivered to Los Angeles on Sept. 21 after a three-day flight from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

"This has been an amazing experience that I will never forget," Givot wrote in his description. "My hope is that this film will show you the amount of dedicated people, and the teamwork, that it took to get the Endeavor to its new home."

    Dexter, Season 7

Every week in?Slate?s?Dexter?TV club, Katy Waldman will have an IM conversation with a different?Dexter?fan. This week, she rehashes episode 7.4 with Laura Helmuth, Slate's science and health editor.?

Katy Waldman: I?m so glad you could make it, Laura. It means more to me than pizza.

Laura Helmuth: Aww. Dexter is secretly heart-warming, isn't it? And he gets better at expressing affection all the time. Possibly feeling it, too? In the first season (and in the first book), one of my favorite lines by him was: "If I could love anyone, it would be Deb." And by Season 7, he clearly loves her.

Waldman: I was surprised at the shift in their dynamic this episode. Usually we have Debra chasing Dexter, while he plays the secretive, brooding guy. But now that, to quote Dex, "everything's changed," he?s desperate to recapture Deb's love and acceptance, and she's the one holding back. I think she really wounds him when she asks whether he is "capable of love."

Helmuth: That whole exchange in the alley was classic Dexter (the show, not the guy): snappy, surprising, funny. When she asks him that question he says, "I love you" and that he's still the same guy he was before she caught him stabbing creepy Travis. "Nothing's changed!" he says.

Waldman: Which maybe just means, ?I don?t want anything to change, even though it has.? Dexter had a pretty good thing going. A beautiful son, a loving sister, a career he?s good at, and the freedom to pursue his nocturnal ?hobby? without arousing suspicion.

Helmuth: One thing that hasn?t changed is that, on Dexter, it?s a really bad idea to get into a bathtub. Deb's dream started out sort of erotic but quickly turned horrorshow. I wonder if the "Deb, will you be mine" line she dreams Dexter saying presages a return of the misguided incest theme of Season 6.

Waldman: I worried about that too! Especially given the strange exchange of vows between Dexter and Debra later in the episode. Deb says she's not sure she feels the same way she once did about her brother and Dexter replies, "I do." Then Deb echoes him, before adding, "But I don't, too."

Helmuth: Relationships are complicated, aren't they? Especially with your adopted brother / love interest / serial killer / competitor for catching bad guys. Deb and Dex have some superstrong bond. Did the ?Deb, be mine? line mean that Debra might soon join her brother in murdering people?

Waldman: Well, we should also remember that Dexter repeatedly calls Ray Speltzer "mine." In the bathtub, Debra could be an accomplice, a lover or a victim.

Helmuth: Yes! Dex is very passionate and jealous of his conquests, which makes for some real confusion around love and violence. And Deb is definitely wrestling with a lot of fears and temptations right now.

But I have to say, although I'm willing to accept a Minotaur serial killer building elaborate mazes in Miami's warehouse district, Deb's sexual attraction to Dex is just too implausible. He was adopted as a two-year-old, and she would have been a newborn, so they would have had just as much of an incest taboo as any biological siblings, thanks to the Westermarck effect.

Waldman: Ooh! Fact checking Dexter. What's the Westermarck effect?

Helmuth: That's the phenomenon that children raised together, as in the early Israeli Kibbutzes, don't become sexually attracted to one another once they hit puberty. It seems like there are incest taboos that work the same way in all kinds of species--if you spend too much time together in childhood, that means you're related, which means it's a really bad idea to mate.

Waldman: Another reason to despise the Dex-and-Deb-forbidden-love subplot!

Helmuth: Speaking of children, how about the different models of fatherhood explored in tonight's episode? Poor Alex gave the last full measure of devotion to his kids, killing himself for them. Isaac turns out to be Viktor?s dad. (Why did they make that relationship so secret?) Dexter refuses to give up Harrison when Deb pressures him to turn over custody to Rita's parents. What do you think--Selfish? Or is he really a great father?

Waldman: I think the show badly wants us to consider Dexter a warm, loving father. (He has sentimental attachments to Harrison?s toys, at least.) And to be honest, I?d be thrilled to have such a bad-ass dad. But maybe I?m not giving the dark passenger his due.

Helmuth: Dex is certainly a sentimentalist! Look no further than his boxes of blood slides. But I think Deb makes a good point that Harrison could get exposed to Dexter's dark side. He does his best to keep his serial killing hidden, but Deb figured it out, and he wasn't able to protect Rita--so she?s right to point out that Dex could get killed or arrested before Harrison is old enough to go off to college.

Waldman: I was sort of fascinated by the way Dexter ended up acceding to so many of Deb's demands, perhaps without realizing he was doing it. She gave him grief about the slides, and one episode later, he consigned them to the flames. She tells him to send Harrison away, and he does (even though he justifies it to himself by saying it's only for a few weeks.)

Helmuth: As a bossy sister myself, I am all for her bossing him around.

Speaking of assertive women, I?d like to see more of the officer who accompanied Quinn to the strip club. When Quinn and Nadia made goo-goo eyes at each other, she snapped: "Do NOT tell me you are fucking her." I hope she's being groomed to replace whoever gets knocked off this season. Maybe even Quinn himself. Who, by the way, is apparently even more crooked than we know. George Romanov?s allusion to the dirty old times is a detail that should pay off nicely in the future.

Waldman: Yes! Poor Quinn. I also have to ask you: What on earth was going on with the Ray Speltzer interrogation?

Helmuth: It was great to see Deb at the top of her head-game during that scene. I wonder how much of Batista's good-cop routine had an element of truth to it, though. Perhaps he's still smarting about being passed over for promotion.

Waldman: That's an interesting point. Every episode of Dexter, Batista seems a bit more defeated. His heartbreaking line about a twice-divorced cop staring down the barrel of retirement made me wonder if he's about to leave this world.

Helmuth: Defeated is exactly right. His last attempt to put his life together was the purchase of a muscle car. I think you're right that he might be looking at lights-out. Especially with a fuck-up like Quinn as his partner.?

Waldman: But back to Speltzer, I just found the interrogation tactics so unconvincing. We were supposed to think that he killed women because he desired his mother? Seriously? Couldn't they have dreamt up something more creative?

Helmuth: I agree that the interrogation was a little melodramatic. There must be too many Freudians on the writing staff. Listen up, Freudians: Sibs don't lust after one another and an Oedipal complex isn't really as strong or deadly as you think it is.

Also, somebody who can build that elaborate a maze and kill for so long without getting caught probably has a little more self-control.

Waldman: Ha! So true. What did you make of Deb's murderous impulses when it came to Speltzer? Did they seem in character?

Helmuth: I think Deb was sort of being used as a moral compass in this episode, channeling emotions the audience has or should have. It does make sense, given her temperament and past frustrations, that she also feels a desire to kill bad guys. Who doesn't sometimes? But I thought it was also interesting that she voiced what we guilty-pleasure audience members don't, which is: Dexter! You kill people! And, even more damning, you let Rita be killed.

Waldman: Was that a fair charge?

Helmuth: It was awfully harsh, but it does have some truth to it. If Dex had cooperated with Deb, maybe they could have gotten Trinity earlier. I am waiting for her to accuse him of not acting in time to stop Trinity from killing her love interest Lutz.

Waldman: The criticism struck me as unfair? How could Dex have known what Trinity would do? But I suppose it makes sense in the context of Dexter's own worldview. He says, "Everything is in my control."

Helmuth: Yes, and his control just keeps slipping. He doesn't make many mistakes, but each one ends up getting somebody killed.

Waldman: He is ever-so neat! I thought it was odd and intriguing when he mocked Speltzer at the graveyard by imitating his shouts. He seemed completely deranged, getting in Speltzer's face and screaming, "Fuck!" Then he said, "It feels good, doesn't it?" What do you think that meant?

Helmuth: The deranged "Fuck" I took as Dex waiting too long between killing episodes?I think he was really jonesing for a fix.

Waldman: To me, it echoed Deb's crazy attack on Speltzer at the victim's funeral and bound the brother-sister duo together.

Helmuth: Ah, yes, those Morgans and their tempers. That was a nice symmetry.

Waldman: Right. I wasn't surprised to see her car in the parking lot in the scene after Speltzer?s murder.

Helmuth: And her sort of flattered comment when he pointed to the smoke: "Did you do this for me?"

Waldman: And I thought he so clearly had! He even told Speltzer he hoped his relationship with Debra could rise from Speltzer?s ashes. That said, I didn?t know how to read the ending. Did Dexter finally bring Debra around? Was that the moral-compass-to-accomplice turning point?

Helmuth: Wasn't it thoughtful? My brother never killed any of my enemies and cremated them in the middle of the night. And I think you're right that it was a turning point. She seems to be coming around to Dexter's point of view. I'm eager to see what happens next week?will she agonize some more? Punish him emotionally? Break down? Pretend not to notice what he does? Send victims his way like Harry did?

But we should go! We have to celebrate another thrilling week of Dexter. Can I buy you a bloody Mary?

Waldman: I don't drink. I make other people drink.

On the other hand, I will drink if someone comes after me with a delicious cocktail.

Monday: What other writers and Slate commenters thought about Episode 1.

Client Communications with BIM: I'm speaking at EcoBuild America ...

Posted: October 14th, 2012 | Author: Jared Banks | Filed under: Short Posts | Tags: Client Communications with BIM, Events | No Comments ?

    Let?s end 2012 in a big way.

Because if we don?t, 2013 will put it completely to shame.

So here?s details on my lecture at EcoBuild America:

    S108: Client Communications with BIM

    Presented By:
    Graphisoft

    Schedule:
    December 4th, 2012
    Tuesday, 8:30am ? 10:00am
    Location: Rm 209A

    Tracks:
Building Information Modeling (BIM) & Information Technology
    National BIM Conference
    Technology User Sessions

    Speaker:
    Jared Banks
, Architect, Writer, ArchiCAD User, Shoegnome, LLC

The ?I? in BIM can be easily understood in its relationship to the physical construction of a project. BIM speeds up basic documentation, deepens links between the AEC team, and allows for continuity with Facility Management. Viewing the Information differently, BIM also provides clients with better understanding of the project and opens them up to larger ideas about the value of Architecture. Presentation materials and visualizations need not be a detour in the design and documentation process. Attendees to this session will learn how to use BIM to help clients visualize, analyze, and virtually live in their projects prior to and during construction. Techniques for visually presenting? information about function, cost, and aesthetics will be shown.

And remember, if you?re closer to Boston than Washington, D.C., I?m giving this talk at Architecture Boston Expo as well. Here?s those details.

A few other things to point out:

    1. There are going to be some other awesome and amazing BIM talks at this event. I?m crazy excited to be speaking at the same event as Finith Jernigan. Here?s a link to his talks. One of them is a panel discussion that also includes Kimon Onuma, FAIA (Holy shit that?s cool too!). It?ll be great to hear them talk and also finally meet so many of my BIM heroes (or I guess hopefully meet so many of my BIM heroes). I have a feeling I?ll be like a kid in a candy store. But the candy will be BIM. Um? that analogy kind of fell apart there.
    2. There will be an ArchiCAD User Group meeting at the conference on Wednesday December 5th from 5:30 pm ? 7:00 pm. Assuming my flights work out, I?ll definitely be at that as well. More details on that to come, I presume.
    3. If you?re going to EcoBuild America to hear me talk, here?s a VIP Code to use: SPK12. It?ll give you a free pass to my session or a 15% discount on the full 3-Day conference.
    4. The end of the year is always a good time to reflect and share some appreciation. Thank you Graphisoft & Graphisoft North America for all the support you guys gave me this year. It?s been awesome and made my transition from some grunt with a side business to whatever I am now so much easier.
    5. There?s still plenty of time to end the year even bigger than just 2 lectures? so you know, I?m working on it.

Arlen Specter Dies At 82 - Business Insider

    AP

Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, who served five terms in the Senate representing Pennsylvania, has died at the age of 82, The Associated Press reported Sunday.

Specter died of complications from non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, with which he had a long battle. He first announced he was battling the cancer in 2005 and underwent chemotherapy. But it returned in 2008 and again this August, when he was hospitalized to treat the disease again.

Specter, seen as a political moderate, shocked both sides of the political aisle when he announced in 2009 that he was switching from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party.

"As the Republican Party has moved farther and farther to the right, I have found myself increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy and more in line with the philosophy of the Democratic Party," Specter said at a news conference announcing his shift.

"In the course of the last several months ... I have traveled the state and surveyed the sentiments of the Republican Party in Pennsylvania and public opinion polls, observed other public opinion polls and have found that the prospects for winning a Republican primary are bleak."

But he subsequently lost a re-election bid in the Democratic primary to Joe Sestak, and he left the Senate in 2011.?

    Here's President Obama's statement on Specter's death:

Arlen Specter was always a fighter.? From his days stamping out corruption as a prosecutor in Philadelphia to his three decades of service in the Senate, Arlen was fiercely independent ? never putting party or ideology ahead of the people he was chosen to serve.? He brought that same toughness and determination to his personal struggles, using his own story to inspire others.? When he announced that his cancer had returned in 2005, Arlen said, "I have beaten a brain tumor, bypass heart surgery and many tough political opponents and I'm going to beat this, too."? Arlen fought that battle for seven more years with the same resolve he used to fight for stem-cell research funding, veterans health, and countless other issues that will continue to change lives for years to come.? Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Joan and the rest of the Specter family.??

Personal Finance: Cut Taxes On Disability Benefits ? Here's How ...

Disability insurance is a prime fringe benefit for employees. But many workers often end up paying taxes on benefit checks.

Some simple steps can help recipients cut taxes on benefits.

The need is potentially widespread. "According to our 2012 survey, 52% of U.S. workers have short-term disability insurance," said Mike Fish, vice president of voluntary benefits with The Hartford. And 44% have long-term disability insurance.

Such coverage can be valuable. If you are unable to work because of illness or injury, health insurance won't replace lost earnings. Disability insurance can fill the gap.

Workers are more likely to become disabled than to die prematurely. And such calamities are not limited to laborers .

Executives and professionals and business owners also suffer disabilities caused by stress.

California and four other states require participation in state disability insurance programs , which can supplement workplace plans.

Such insurance can help replace income in the event of injury. But insurance paid for by an employer comes with a potential tax trap. Say a hypothetical Bob Hall has a heart attack. His earnings stop. Hall collects disability benefits from his employer's policy. But he owes income tax on that money.

That's because Hall's company paid all the premiums for his disability insurance.

The same tax treatment will result if Hall pays the premiums with pretax dollars set aside in his employer's cafeteria benefit plan.

    Tax-Free Tactics

But there are ways to get disability insurance benefits without owing income tax. One is to pay for the coverage yourself.

In our example, Hall might ask his employer to arrange for the company to treat disability insurance as taxable compensation.

If Hall's company is willing, his employer can calculate his share of the premium and include that amount in Hall's gross income. Hall will pay tax on that amount, so he's effectively acquiring the coverage with after-tax dollars.

    Then benefits will be untaxed.

Employer-sponsored group disability insurance may be relatively inexpensive. Fish puts the average yearly cost around $400.

If Hall is in the 35% bracket and reports that $400 as income, he'd pay $140 a year in extra tax. But if Hall is disabled he could collect thousands of dollars a year in tax-free benefits.

Another way to get tax-free benefits is to buy individual disability insurance. You'd pay the premiums so any payout would be tax-free.

Even if you have coverage at work, you might buy an individual policy as a supplement. That's because group disability coverage often limits benefits. Employers don't want to reward employees for not working. And short-term coverage will stop paying if you're out of work for a long time.

Endeavour's final miles turn into all-night affair

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? In thousands of Earth orbits, the space shuttle Endeavour traveled 123 million miles. But the last few miles of its final journey are proving hard to get through.

Endeavour's 12-mile crawl across Los Angeles to the California Science Museum hit repeated delays Saturday, leaving expectant crowds along city streets and at the destination slowly dwindling.

Officials estimated the shuttle, originally expected to finish the trip early Saturday evening, would not arrive until 6 a.m. PDT or later Sunday.

At times on Saturday it seemed the only thing moving was the shuttle's fast-changing ETA.

The day started off promising, with Endeavour 90 minutes ahead of schedule. But accumulated hurdles and hiccups caused it to run hours behind at day's end.

The problems included longer than expected maintenance of the rig carrying the shuttle and physical obstacles within the shuttle's wingspan including light posts, building edges, and most of all trees.

In a scene that repeated itself many times, a small tree on the narrowest section of the move brought the procession to a stop, forcing crews to find creative ways to dip a wing under or raise it over the tree without having to cut it down.

Some 400 trees had been removed to avoid such situations, but officials said most of the trees that gave them trouble could not be cut down because they were old or treasured for other reasons, including some planted in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

The crowd had its problems too. Despite temperatures in the mid-70s, several dozen people were treated for heat-related injuries after a long day in the sun, according to fire officials.

But it was a happy, peaceful crowd, with firefighters having only to respond to a sheared hydrant and a small rubbish fire, and no reports of any arrests.

And despite the late problems the mood for most of the day was festive.

At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards as it inched through working-class streets of southern Los Angeles.

Along the 12-mile course, thousands marveled at the engineering. Some rooted for Endeavour when it appeared it might clip a light post.

"This is great for the city as a whole. It makes us proud," said Dean Martinez, a project director for a nonprofit who began waiting before dawn to get a glimpse of Endeavour.

Unlike other high-profile events like the Academy Awards or the Rose Parade, the procession was centered in some of the area's most economically downtrodden and troubled places. The shuttle passed several gritty areas and shuttered businesses, and rolled down many streets that were aflame two decades earlier during the 1992 riots brought on by the Rodney King beating.

"Having a shuttle come through this area of high poverty, it can only be a good thing" for the community," said Damian Pipkins, a volunteer at Eso Won Books.

Endeavour hit the pavement before dawn Friday, trundling out of the Los Angeles International Airport on a remote-controlled 160-wheel carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs. When it reached a freeway overpass that night, it was towed by a truck.

The shuttle made a late-morning pit stop Saturday at the Forum ? former home of the Los Angeles Lakers ? where it was greeted in the arena's parking lot by a throng of cheering spectators. It was late to its second public celebration that included a dance performance choreographed by Debbie Allen.

As it wound through South Los Angeles, residents welcomed its presence. Before the move, some lamented over the loss of shade as trees were chopped down.

Others thought it was a decent trade.

"If you have to go through a little bit of pain to have something nice for the community, then it's worth it," said Pamela Tucker, who lives a block away from Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Endeavour may have circled the globe nearly 4,700 times, but its roots are grounded in California. Its main engines were fabricated in the San Fernando Valley. The heat tiles were invented in Silicon Valley. Its "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

It's no longer shiny and sleek, like when it first rolled off the assembly line in the Mojave Desert in 1991 to replace the lost Challenger. As it cruised block-by-block, it's hard to miss what 123 million miles in space and two dozen re-entries can do to the exterior.

Shuffling Endeavour through city streets was a laborious undertaking ? nearly a year in the making. It could not be taken apart without damaging the delicate tiles. Airlifting it was out of the question. So was driving on freeways since it was too massive to fit through underpasses.

There were consequences. Several hundred Inglewood residents suffered hours-long outages when power lines were temporarily snipped. Some businesses lost customers because of street and sidewalk closures.

Such a move is not cheap. The cross-town transport was estimated at $10 million, to be paid for by the science center and private donations.

    Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX)

In the coming crush of hybrid ultrabooks?all made to make the most of Windows 8?Sony has the distinction of being the first to reach the PC Labs with the Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX). It comes with a touch screen that takes advantage of Windows 8 touch functionality, as well as a fast 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) and a third-generation Intel Core processor. The hybrid design of the Duo 11 stills has some kinks to work out, and it isn't helped by short battery-life, software glitches, or a design that is uncomfortable to hold.

    Design
The VAIO Duo 11 is a convertible ultrabook, meaning that it functions both as a laptop and as a tablet. The transformation relies on what Sony calls the "Smooth Surf Slider design," a spring-loaded sliding hinge mechanism. Lift the back edge of the screen and pull back and up, and the screen slides up into a laptop-like position. Unfortunately, those are the only two positions available, and adjusting the screen angle in laptop mode is out of the question. Also, be careful not to stick anything in the gap behind the screen, below the hinge?exposed springs and ribbon cables could easily be damaged if you tried to close the system on a foreign object.

The 11.6-inch screen adds capacitive touch and 10-finger tracking to the gorgeous 1920-by-1080 resolution IPS display, which not only looks great, it's also a huge step up from the 1366-by-768 resolution display seen on the likes of the Samsung Series 7 Slate (700T1A) or the Toshiba Portege Z935-P300 ultrabook. Gorilla Glass protects the screen from scratches and scuffs, which is important, because even when closed?in tablet form?the display is exposed. One maddening quirk: The touch screen would occasionally stop registering touch input while in laptop mode. Sometimes this could be fixed by switching into tablet mode and back; other times it required power-cycling the laptop. When touch is a major feature in your device, it behooves you to make sure that it works properly.

When closed in tablet mode, the Duo 11 measures 0.71 by 12.60 by 7.84 inches (HWD) and it weighs only 2.9 pounds thanks to a lightweight magnesium-alloy frame and glossy black plastic chassis. It's thin and light enough for use as a tablet, but weight isn't the only factor to consider. The burnished black plastic gathered not only smudges, but also scuffs, which you don't want to see on a device that will be handled constantly. The angular lines of the VAIO Duo 11 are in keeping with the design ID used throughout the VAIO line. It looks great while the Duo is in laptop mode, but the jutting angles and sharp edges aren't comfortable to hold in tablet mode. If there's a flaw in the design, this is it.

The chiclet keyboard is smaller than those usually seen on 11-inch laptops, with no palmrest to speak of, and a shallow typing depth, even for an ultrabook. The full-size keyboard also has slightly undersized keys, making the spacing a bit wider than you'll find on most chiclet keyboards. In the center of the chiclet keyboard is an optical mouse, similar to the optical trackpoint seen on the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2. The optical sensor has a polished, rounded surface, which fingertips glide over easily, but it's a different experience than you'll have with a regular trackpad because it's highly sensitive. The mouse buttons are located on the edge of the keyboard, just below the spacebar. The size and dimensions of the hybrid laptop don't provide room for a palmrest.

Finally, Sony overlooked what should have been a basic detail. The Duo 11 comes with a digitizer stylus for handwriting and drawing with the tablet, but nowhere on the tablet will you find either storage for the stylus or any sort of tether point to attach it to. Sony does offer an accessory sleeve for the Duo 11, which includes stylus storage, but without it, the average user will find their laptop and pen separated rather quickly. Thankfully, any Wacom digitizer stylus can be used. Aside from this oversight, using the stylus is great, with 256 levels of pressure sensitivity and automatic palm-rejection letting you rest your wrist on the screen as you would with pen and paper, without causing any problems.

    Features
Because the VAIO Duo 11 doubles as a tablet, you'll also find ports and buttons all over the device, rather than grouping them entirely on the right and left sides of the chassis. Some of these connections are standard for ultrabooks, like two USB 3.0 ports (one with power for charging devices while the system is asleep), a card slot (SD/MS), a compact Ethernet port, and 3.5mm stereo headphone jack. Bluetooth 4.0 lets you pair the latest Windows 8 peripherals, and 802.11n Wi-Fi keeps you connected as you roam from room to room. An HDMI port and VGA output let you connect to an external HDTV or monitor, but the Duo 11 is also WiDi-capable, letting you wirelessly stream through any WiDi adapter, like the Netgear Push2TV.

Business users aren't left out either, as the VAIO Duo 11 has integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM), Symantec Validation and ID Protection Service (VIP), Intel Anti-Theft Technology, and a connection for a desktop port replicator.

Others features have clearly come from the tablet side of the equation, such as the front- and rear-facing 2.4-megapixel cameras and the screen rotation lock button. Internal sensors now include GPS, Accelerometer, Gyro, and Digital Compass. Newer features not seen on previous laptops or tablets include the soon-to-be-ubiquitous Windows Key button, effectively a physical home or start button on the front of the tablet, which duplicates the function of your keyboard's Windows key. Other physical action buttons include volume controls and a screen orientation lock button. Finally, Sony has also built-in Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology, used for pairing the Duo 11 to any device with Sony One-Touch technology, such as the Sony SRS-BTM8 Bluetooth wireless speaker and MDR-1RBT Bluetooth headphones.

Sony has outfitted the VAIO Duo 11 with a 128GB SSD, which makes for speedy two-second boot and wake times, and boosts day-to-day performance. It's the same capacity offered in the Toshiba Portege Z935-P300, but the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 offers a larger 500GB spinning hard drive?because of the moving parts, traditional hard drives aren't well-suited to tablets that will pick up and move in normal use. There's also no room for an optical drive in the slim confines of a convertible ultrabook, so those still using DVDs will need an external drive.

Sony doesn't waste the chance to share a number of preinstalled programs and apps. When you first see the Start Screen, you'll be greeted by a number of VAIO branded apps (VAIO Care, VAIO Message Center, VAIO Update, and VAIO Control Center), along with app tiles for HuluPlus, Kaspersky Now, Skype, and Slacker Radio. The Kaspersky app is tied to a 30-day trial of Kaspersky Internet Security, and you'll also find a trial version of Microsoft Office 2013. Sony PlayMemories Home provides a simple hub for organizing, viewing, editing and sharing images and videos. Sony Album and Sony Music let you organize your media and stream to DLNA compatible TVs and audio systems. Sony SocialLife is more of a meta-app, consolidating social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) and news feeds into a single attractive interface. For showing off the digitizer stylus mentioned above, Sony includes Sony Note Anytime, a handwriting recognition app for note taking, and also throws in a copy of ArtRage Studio Pro, letting you doodle and draw to your heart's content.

Sony covers the VAIO Duo 11 with a one-year warranty plus toll-free phone support. Additional accessories are also available for the Duo 11, including a protective sleeve, and a secondary battery slice.

    Performance
Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX) The VAIO Duo 11 is equipped with the same third-generation Intel Core i5-3317U processor (1.7GHz) used in the Toshiba Portege Z935-P300 and other ultrabooks. The VAIO Duo 11 posted a solid 2.4 point score in Cinebench R11.5, identical to the score of the Toshiba Z935-P300, which uses the same processor. Paired with 8GB of RAM and the aforementioned 128GB SSD, the VAIO Duo 11 offers decent productive capability, as evidenced by its PCMark 7 score of 4,648 points. While it falls short of the Toshiba Z935-P300 (5,477 points) it's significantly more powerful than the Samsung Series 7 Slate (2,352 points) which sports a second-generation Intel Core processor, and is one of the few x86 Windows tablets we've reviewed up to this point.

    Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX)

Intel's integrated graphics processing (Intel HD Graphics 4000) provides enough visual oomph for multimedia and casual games, which is perfect for the touch-based gaming available on the Duo 11. As a result, it scored 1,117 points in 3DMark 11 (on Entry settings), and completed the updated Handbrake video encoding test in 1 minute 25 seconds. For most media tasks, like editing photos or loading graphics-intensive Web pages, this is more than enough graphics capability. High-end gaming, however, is out of reach on this system, as evidenced by unplayable scores in both of our gaming tests, Heaven and Alien vs. Predator; both tests produced an unplayable 12 frames per second when set to lower resolution (1366-by-768) and medium detail (anti-aliasing off).

The VAIO Duo 11 lasted 3 hours 9 minutes in a video rundown test, falling short of the 4:45 Sony estimates in press materials. While the test isn't as varied or detailed as MobileMark?our normal battery test?it does paint a clear picture for the average user. Three hours may make it through two (shorter) movies back to back, but isn't enough time to take you through a full day of work or school. It's especially irritating in the tablet form-factor?plugging in a laptop isn't that big a hassle since they are fairly stationary during use, but it will seriously cramp the use-it-anywhere convenience of a tablet.

While there will be plenty of comparisons made in the coming weeks, the Sony VAIO Duo 11 doesn't make the best first-impression for the emerging hybrid ultrabook category. As an ultrabook the Duo 11's awkward keyboard and short battery-life hamper the productive potential it might have had. As a tablet, the design is uncomfortable and the short battery-life cripples the convenience and entertainment value. The Sony VAIO Duo 11 shows promise, but there's plenty of room to improve.

javascript reuters: Las Vegas Limousine Service | travel and leisure ...

If you are thinking on leasing a limousine service while you are in Las Vegas, you are going to have to spend a lot of money, that's for sure. Before you choose a Las Vegas Limo company, you have to consider many aspects to ensure you get your money's worth.

Limousine companies are constantly competing with each other to provide excellent chauffeur services to its consumers. You will find it hard to choose the limousine company you want to get for your Vegas escapades because they also offer exceptional amenities that are really very attractive to anyone.

As mentioned above, it might help you decide on which Las Vegas Limo service you will have to get by looking and comparing the amenities each one of them offers. In all industry where competitions are really high, one must make a distinction from the either. In the case of limousine companies, they pretty much offer and provide the same things like built-in bar, premium entertainment system, privacy divider, leather seats and many more. The only difference is how they will present these amenities to make it more marketable so they can get many customers. The cost that you have to pay for a limousine service varies and largely depends on the amenities included. If you want a cheap limousine service, expect it to be as simple as driving and taking you where you want to go, just the typical. No nothing. If you want to experience luxury and royal treatment, you are going to have pay a huge amount of money.

A limousine can accommodate from a minimum of 4 passengers up the 20, the most, depending on the size. It also has a greater ceiling height for a more comfortable limousine experience.

Limousine provides many amenities. Every limousine has a fully stocked wet bar. Usually, there is a sideboard that contains complimentary bottles of champagne, bottled water, alcohol, ice and glassware. Another spotlight for limousine amenities is the entertainment system which includes flat screen TV, radio player, DVD and CD player equipped with surround sound systems. Marketing Case Study: The Curse Of Being Multi-Talented ...

    October 12, 2012

Like many of us who are self-employed, Martha is an individual with many talents.

This characteristic became obvious in yesterday?s 15-minute laser coaching session with Martha.

It helps explain her lack of focus in terms of target market and the services that she delivers. It also helps clarify why her client pipeline is running dry.

Martha started her business in response to requests for friends who were having problems with their small businesses. At the time her skill set included such functions as ?brainstorming, decision-making, planning projects, office systems? so she applied these tools to help her friends. Happily, as a result of her assistance, Martha?s friends resolved their problems. Encouraged by her friends, she started her own business, offering the same kinds of services that had helped these friends.

As a result of referrals from friends and friends of friends, she was able to build a sustainable flow of new business.

Along with the sustainable flow of new business, two new trends developed. The work that was initially challenging and engaging for Martha became more routine and started to lose its appeal.

And second, her clients and friends suggested that she start training sessions and write a book to showcase her skills. Since she loved writing and public speaking, Martha did both?and then more of both. After a few years of writing books conducting training workshops and accepting whatever speaking engagement came along (mostly without getting paid), she noticed that her flow of new clients had virtually disappeared.

I have asked Martha to reflect on one question for next week?s session. What do you think that question is?
