Actor James Gandolfini dies in Italy at age 51
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? James Gandolfini, whose portrayal of a brutal, emotionally delicate crime boss in HBO's "The Sopranos" was the brilliant center of one of TV's greatest drama series and turned the mobster stereotype on its head, died Wednesday in Italy. He was 51.
Gandolfini died while vacationing in Rome, the cable channel and Gandolfini's managers Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders said in a joint statement. No cause of death was given.
"He was a genius," said "Sopranos" creator David Chase. "Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that. He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time. A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes."
Gandolfini, who won three Emmy Awards for his role as Tony Soprano, worked steadily in film and on stage after the series ended. He earned a 2009 Tony Award nomination for his role in the celebrated production of "God of Carnage."
"Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving," said Armstrong and Sanders.
HBO called the actor a "special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone, no matter their title or position, with equal respect." The channel expressed sympathy for his wife and children.
Joe Gannascoli, who played Vito Spatafore on the HBO drama, said he was shocked and heartbroken.
"Fifty-one and leaves a kid ? he was newly married. His son is fatherless now. ... It's way too young," Gannascoli said.
Gandolfini and his wife, Deborah, who were married in 2008, have a daughter, Liliana, born last year, HBO said. The actor and his former wife, Marcy, have a teenage son, Michael.
Gandolfini's performance in "The Sopranos" was indelible and career-making, but he refused to be stereotyped as the bulky mobster who was a therapy patient, family man and apparently effortless killer.
In a December 2012 interview with The Associated Press ? a rare sit-down for the star who avoided the spotlight ? he was upbeat about a slew of smaller roles following the breathtaking blackout ending in 2007 of "The Sopranos."
"I'm much more comfortable doing smaller things," Gandolfini said in the interview. "I like them. I like the way they're shot; they're shot quickly. It's all about the scripts ? that's what it is ? and I'm getting some interesting little scripts."
He played Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in Kathryn Bigelow's Osama bin Laden hunt docudrama "Zero Dark Thirty." He worked with Chase for the '60s period drama "Not Fade Away," in which he played the old-school father of a wannabe rocker. And in Andrew Dominick's crime flick "Killing Them Softly," he played an aged, washed-up hit man.
There were comedies such as the political satire "In the Loop," and the heartwarming drama "Welcome to the Rileys," which co-starred Kristen Stewart. He voiced the Wild Thing Carol in "Where the Wild Things Are" and made a rare return to the TV screen with the HBO film "Cinemate Verite."
He was mourned online by a flood of celebrity comments. "The great James Gandolfini passed away today. Only 51. I can't believe it," Bette Midler posted on her Twitter account.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to James Gandolfini's family. An extraordinary actor. RIP, Mr. Gandolfini," Robin Williams tweeted.
Deploying his unsought clout as a star, Gandolfini produced (though only sparingly appeared in) a pair documentaries for HBO focused on a cause he held dear: veterans affairs.
"Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq" (2007) profiled 10 soldiers and Marines who had cheated death but continued to wage personal battles long after their military service had ended. Four years later, "Wartorn: 1861-2010" charted victims of post-traumatic stress disorder from the U.S. invasion of Iraq all the way back to the Civil War.
"Do I think a documentary is going to change the world?" Gandolfini said with characteristic modesty during an interview about the latter film. "No, but I think there will be individuals who will learn things from it, so that's enough."
His final projects included the film "Animal Rescue," directed by Michael R. Roskam and written by Dennis Lehane, which has been shot and is expected to be released next year. He also had agreed to star in a seven-part limited series for HBO, "Criminal Justice," based on a BBC show. He had shot a pilot for an early iteration of the project.
Gandolfini grew up in Park Ridge, N.J., the son of a building maintenance chief at a Catholic school and a high school lunch lady.
While Tony Soprano was a larger-than-life figure, Gandolfini was exceptionally modest and obsessive ? he described himself as "a 260-pound Woody Allen."
In past interviews, his cast mates had far more glowing descriptions to offer.
"I had the greatest sparring partner in the world, I had Muhammad Ali," said Lorraine Bracco, who, as Tony's psychiatrist Dr. Melfi, went one-on-one with Gandolfini in their penetrating therapy scenes. "He cares what he does, and does it extremely well."
After earning a degree in communications from Rutgers University, Gandolfini moved to New York, where he worked as a bartender, bouncer and nightclub manager. When he was 25, he joined a friend of a friend in an acting class, which he continued for several years.
Gandolfini's first big break was a Broadway production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" where he played Steve, one of Stanley Kowalski's poker buddies. His film debut was in Sidney Lumet's "A Stranger Among Us" (1992).
Director Tony Scott, who killed himself in August 2012, had praised Gandolfini's talent for fusing violence with charisma ? which he would perfect in Tony Soprano.
Gandolfini played a tough guy in Tony Scott's 1993 film "True Romance" who beat Patricia Arquette's character to a pulp while offering such jarring, flirtatious banter as, "You got a lot of heart kid."
Scott called Gandolfini "a unique combination of charming and dangerous."
In his early career, Gandolfini had supporting roles in "Crimson Tide" (1995), "Get Shorty" (1995), "The Juror" (1996), Lumet's "Night Falls on Manhattan" (1997), "She's So Lovely" (1997), "Fallen" (1998) and "A Civil Action" (1998). But it was "True Romance" that piqued the interest of Chase.
He shared a Broadway stage with Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden in "God of Carnage" when he received the best-actor Tony nod. He was in "On the Waterfront" with David Morse and was an understudy in a revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1992 starring Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange.
In his 2012 AP interview, Gandolfini said he gravitated to acting as a release, a way to get rid of anger. "I don't know what exactly I was angry about," he said.
"I try to avoid certain things and certain kinds of violence at this point," he said last year. "I'm getting older, too. I don't want to be beating people up as much. I don't want to be beating women up and those kinds of things that much anymore."

'Dexter' prepares for new season with cold treat

"Dexter" fans in New York and Los Angeles are in for a tasty treat. As Showtime prepares for the launch of the hit drama's final season and its push for some Emmy recognition, the network is giving fans in the two cities a special creation: a "Killer Combo" of an ice cream sandwich from Coolhaus this Wednesday through Sunday.
We hit up the Coolhaus truck parked at E. 53rd St. and Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday to check out the offering, and it was a concoction worthy of the vigilante killer. The sandwich features two sides to represent Dexter Morgan -- his light (Snickerdoodle cookie) and dark halves (double chocolate cookie), with Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream and a bloody delicious cherry swirl sandwiched in the middle.

Yes, it was as yummy as it looks and sounds. (It would've been more fitting to have the sandwich dripping with all the blood Dexter tends to find at his crime scenes, but we're just being nitpicky.)
We weren't the only ones who were excited by the sight of Dexter Morgan's face on the side of an ice cream truck in New York. (And also a sign that read "FREE ice cream sandwich!") The line of "Dexter" and sweet treat fans went around the corner of the block. According to an employee, after being open for only two hours, they had already given away more than 265 ice cream sandwiches.

Hands-on with the NEC Terrain: the company's first US phone in eight years
Let's face it: no rugged phone is going to get more attention today than the Galaxy S4 Active. Just the same, NEC is showing off the Terrain, its first handset for the US market since 2005. The phone, which is hitting AT&T for $99 with a two-year agreement, is mainly aimed at the enterprise (read: field technicians and other mobile workers). Since it's unlikely to reach mainstream consumers, we won't be running a full-on review, but we did take the opportunity to get hands-on. As you'd expect of a device that can be immersed in water up to 30 minutes, this thing's coated in rubber, with a sealed USB port and a secure (but removable) battery cover. It's a bit chunky for a phone, to be sure, but at 6.06 ounces it's still eminently portable. In fact, the rounded edges and soft finish make it more comfortable to hold than some of the more minimal handsets we've seen recently.
Other than that, you'll be pleased to find an unskinned version of Android, though it's 4.0 and not a newer build like 4.2. The capacitive screen responds well to taps and swipes, though the 640 x 480 resolution isn't going to knock anyone'e socks off -- and neither will the washed-out colors. Performance-wise, the dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 8960 processor means transitions happen quickly, and there isn't any tiling in the Chrome browser. We also got on well with the QWERTY keyboard, though the buttons are packed in quite tightly. And that's a good thing: it's slim pickings for anyone who wants a portrait QWERTY Android phone. Finishing up our tour, you'll find a microSD slot (to support the 8GB of built-in storage), dedicated speaker and push-to-talk buttons and dual 5MP / 0.3MP cameras, with an NFC radio under the hood. It'll be available tomorrow on AT&T's LTE network, through the carrier's business channel, specifically. Check out the hands-on photos below -- we even got a requisite shot of it in a fish tank.

Fast-moving New Mexico blaze causes evacuations
PECOS, N.M. (AP) ? A fast-moving fire in New Mexico's Santa Fe National Forest prompted evacuations of homes and campgrounds, threatened cabins, and closed a state highway Friday.
Officials asked residents in 140 homes ? mostly used for the summer ? to leave as crews battled the 3.1-square-mile blaze near the communities of Pecos and Tres Lagunas, about 25 miles east of Santa Fe.
They also evacuated campgrounds and closed trailheads around Pecos, Las Vegas and Santa Fe as they worked on containment lines in hopes of preventing the fire from moving toward the capital city's watershed and the Tres Lagunas community.
Officials said the fire doubled in size by Friday afternoon and was still totally uncontained. That prompted New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez to declare a state of emergency in San Miguel County to free up state funds to fight the fire.
New Mexico State Forestry spokesman Dan Ware said the evacuations came after the fire jumped state Route 63.
"Fire activity is picking up this morning, and because of expected high winds, low humidity and increasing temperatures, the spread potential is high," Ware said.
Officials said a downed power line ignited the blaze Thursday. It's the first major wildfire this year in New Mexico, which is in its driest two-year period in nearly 120 years of record keeping.
"It has been a slow start to the season, until this point," said State Forester Tony Delfin. "Now we expect the conditions to go on until the monsoons come or the weather changes the pattern."
Martinez said about 40 people, mostly hikers and campers, have been evacuated from the area.
Meanwhile, firefighters gained ground on a wildfire in the mountains north of Los Angeles. Crews took advantage of cool morning weather to make progress Friday, but scattered flames continued to climb hillsides.
The 2.2-square-mile wildfire was 15 percent contained, and as many as 500 firefighters hoped to make further progress before the day turned hot and dry, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Nathan Judy said.
A flare-up prompted authorities to briefly evacuate about 25 homes along a canyon road in the Angeles National Forest in the morning, but residents were later allowed to return.
"Right now the fire's not doing a whole lot. It's just making small runs here and there," Judy said. "There's no large fire front."
He said the blaze was burning near power lines, although utilities reported no damage.
In New Mexico, a helicopter helped with efforts to secure the western perimeter of the fire Friday morning, but it was grounded by late morning due to high winds.
Nearly 300 firefighters were working on the blaze, which was being fueled by winds from the north and northwest.
Duane Archuleta, forest fire management officer for the Santa Fe and Carson national forests, said if winds pushed the blaze toward an area that burned in the 2000 Viveash fire, it might help efforts to contain it.
"The fire could run and hit that ridge and kind of die out on that ridge," he said.
No structures had burned and no injuries were reported, but the fire was burning near Tres Lagunas, an upscale community of cabins and vacation homes.
"They're really working that hard and holding onto that," Archuleta said.
Among those evacuated were a group of seventh-graders staying at the Panchuela Campground.
Some homeowners in the Pecos Canyon area couldn't reach their houses Thursday because emergency crews had closed state Highway 63.
Tracy Bennett, manager of Hidden Valley Ranch guest ranch north of Pecos, said he evacuated his four guests as soon he saw smoke Thursday.
"The power's out and with all this going on, it's just unnerving," he said Friday as he watched the blaze from the roadblock.

HTC One (AT&T)
AT&T can't ruin HTC's gorgeous new smartphone, but it tried. The AT&T version of the HTC One ($199.99 with contract; $599.99 without), the most elegant Android phone of 2013, is laden down with hideous and undeletable bloatware. But since that's par for the course with AT&T Android phones, don't let the bloatware stop you from buying the most beautiful phone we've seen so far this year.
The AT&T HTC One is very similar to the Sprint HTC One, which we reviewed in full earlier this month. It has the same all-metal body, the same excellent front-mounted Boomsound speakers and the same UltraPixel camera, which works very well in low light but limits your ability to digitally crop and zoom your images. Read our Sprint HTC One review for details. We'll focus here on the differences here.
Bloatware
The most notable difference here is all the undeletable bloatware AT&T stuffed onto this phone. AT&T's lust to take credit knows few bounds here: for instance, it rebranded HTC's own excellent guided setup app as AT&T Ready2Go, making it less visually appealing in the process.
Other undeletable apps, guaranteed to stay at the top of your app list because they start with "A," include AT&T DriveMode, AT&T FamilyMap, AT&T Locker, AT&T Navigator, and AT&T Smart Wi-Fi. Further down the app list there's Live TV, SoundHound, and YP Mobile.
These undeletable apps often aren't best of breed. DriveMode is one of many "don't text and drive" apps on the market. AT&T Locker, a cloud storage service, is actually far worse than the Dropbox promo included on other carrier versions of the One: Locker gives you 5GB free while Dropbox gives you 25GB. AT&T Smart Wi-Fi is like a less stable version of Devicescape DataSaver, which automatically connects you to Wi-Fi hotspots. In general, the point is that you can find apps on Google Play which do all the things the preloads do, often better?but you can't delete the preloads. It's infuriating.
Call Quality and Networking
AT&T shouldn't feel so nervous, because its LTE network is better than ever. I got a solid 11-12Mbps down and 5-8Mbps up in midtown Manhattan using Ookla Speedtest.net. AT&T's LTE now covers 183 markets from coast to coast, with much of the rest of the country covered with at least HSPA 14.4 speeds. While Verizon Wireless still has more LTE, AT&T's 3G fallback network is much faster than Verizon's.
This model of the One has quad-band GSM, HSPA+ on the 850/1900/2100MHz bands, and LTE on the 700 and AWS bands. That means it'll work with AT&T's 3G and LTE networks and roam on HSPA+ 3G networks abroad; it won't work well with any other U.S. carrier.
Call quality here is also very good, although I haven't tested the competing Samsung Galaxy S 4 on AT&T's network yet. The speakerphone is a real standout, thanks to the front-facing Boomsound speakers. Call quality in the earpiece is sharp and clear, with a lot of treble. As with the Sprint version of this phone, noise cancellation is imperfect. It is certainly good enough, even in an area with heavy construction noise, but the sound leaked through a little bit.
AT&T also killed off the LTE mode toggle in the HTC One's settings, so you can't turn off LTE if you're in a weak coverage area. Once again, that's the case with all recent AT&T Android phones.
Battery life is similar to the Sprint device. I got 5 hours, 43 minutes of LTE video streaming and 12 hours, 48 minutes of talk time, both solid results that suggest a full day's use, and better results than the Galaxy S 4 on T-Mobile.
Comparisons and Conclusions
We're ladeling praise liberally over the HTC One, so why doesn't it get our Editors' Choice award? After seeing the Samsung Galaxy S 4, that device scores just a little bit better than the One thanks to its lighter weight, faster processor, high-res camera, and tuneable call audio. But the big difference between the One and the GS 4 is really philosophy: The One is about all-metal elegance (all that bloatware aside) and the GS 4 is about more, more, more.?
Both phones are great choices on AT&T, and both have fresher technology than Apple's iPhone 5. You may still want to turn to the iPhone 5, though, for its more easily pocketable size and unbeatable library of apps.
If you're considering this model of the HTC One, we'd also suggest you consider with the $574.99 unlocked model direct from HTC. While you don't save any money over the subsidized model (as AT&T doesn't give you a discount for bringing your own phone) you'll get the same performance and LTE speed, minus the bloatware. That could be the best of all worlds here.
